ZAG is proud to host Gianfranco Foddai’s Piccola Orchestra – Canzoni d’Autore, a special concert dedicated to the poetic and powerful world of Italian songwriting.

Born and raised in Italy and now based in Seattle, Gianfranco Foddai is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader whose work bridges poetry, storytelling, and emotional connection through music. For this performance at ZAG, Gianfranco presents a carefully curated repertoire drawn from the golden generation of Italian cantautori, including Fabrizio De André, Lucio Dalla, and Francesco De Gregori, along with other iconic voices that shaped Italy’s cultural and musical identity.

Rooted in melody and lyrical depth, this music lives somewhere between folk, chanson, and classic songwriting, carried by narrative, intimacy, and expressive nuance. Gianfranco’s approach honors the spirit of these songs while allowing space for fresh arrangements, dynamic interplay, and subtle improvisation.

For this special performance, Gianfranco will be joined by a four-piece ensemble, featuring drums and percussion, violin, double and electric bass, saxophone and flute. Gianfranco will sing and alternate between guitar and piano, guiding the ensemble through moments that range from delicate and reflective to full, cinematic, and richly textured.

This evening is an invitation into the world of Italian canzone d’autore — a tradition where words matter as much as melody, and where music becomes a shared emotional experience.

Whether you are deeply familiar with this repertoire or discovering it for the first time, this concert offers a rare opportunity to experience these songs live in an intimate setting, performed with respect, passion, and depth.

Reserve your seat and join us for a night of music, poetry, and Italian song.
